Background of the Study
Social media platforms have revolutionized communication and information sharing; however, their pervasive use among students has raised concerns about study habits and academic productivity. In Benin City, the ubiquity of smartphones and easy access to social media has led to addictive behaviors that interfere with focused study time. Many students are observed to spend extended hours on platforms rather than engaging in academic activities, leading to fragmented attention spans and disrupted sleep patterns (Ibeh, 2023). Research indicates that excessive social media use is associated with procrastination, diminished retention of study material, and a general decline in academic performance (Uwaifo, 2024). Furthermore, the interactive nature of these platforms encourages frequent checking of notifications and constant online interaction, which exacerbates distractions. Studies in similar contexts have shown that intervention strategies, such as digital detox programs and enhanced time management training, can mitigate these adverse effects (Adebayo, 2025). This study investigates the extent to which social media addiction impacts students’ study habits, analyzing behavioral patterns, academic records, and time allocation. The findings are expected to provide insights into how social media influences learning processes and inform recommendations for educators and policymakers to develop strategies that balance digital engagement with academic responsibilities.

Statement of the Problem
In Benin City, rampant social media addiction among students is emerging as a critical issue, disrupting study routines and academic performance. The addictive use of social media leads to reduced study time, frequent interruptions, and poor concentration during academic tasks (Ibeh, 2023). Despite awareness of these negative outcomes, there is insufficient evidence on the direct impact on learning outcomes. This gap in research makes it challenging for educators to design effective interventions. Therefore, this study aims to identify the specific ways in which social media addiction undermines study habits and academic achievements, thereby highlighting the need for targeted strategies (Uwaifo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To determine the extent of social media usage among students.
  • To evaluate the relationship between social media addiction and study habits.
  • To propose intervention strategies for improved academic focus.

Research Questions:

  • How does social media addiction affect students’ study routines?
  • What is the relationship between social media use and academic performance?
  • Which strategies can mitigate the negative impacts of social media on study habits?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Higher levels of social media use correlate with poorer study habits.
  • H2: Social media addiction negatively impacts academic performance.
  • H3: Implementing digital time-management strategies improves study outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it elucidates the detrimental effects of social media addiction on student study habits in Benin City. The findings will offer crucial insights for educators and policymakers to develop targeted interventions that promote balanced digital usage and enhance academic performance. Ultimately, the research contributes to improved educational practices and supports strategies to mitigate digital distractions among students.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to examining the impact of social media addiction on study habits among students in Benin City, Oredo Local Government Area.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Social Media Addiction: Excessive, compulsive use of social media platforms that interferes with daily activities.
  • Study Habits: Regular practices and behaviors related to academic learning.
  • Academic Performance: Measurable outcomes reflecting student achievement in educational settings.
